Is This the True Meaning of Leadership?

I just finished my daily routine. I woke up at 6 am this morning and wiped the sleep out of my eyes. As normal, I went into the office and mounted my trusty recumbent bike. Every day, Monday to Friday, I wake at the same time, ride a bike for 45 minutes an read. This routine took me about 6 months of painful alarm clocks and moans from Julie before it became a habit, now I am doing it everyday naturally. Anything you want to be a habit can be if you go through the pain of setting it up. Now I LOVE the routine.

I am reading another Robin Sharma book “The Saint, The Surf & The CEO” and i stumbled upon a really profound statement that may be a definition of the Meaning of Leadership or even more deeply the meaning of life. I can definitely say that I have been guilty of falling into the trap that I am about to reveal to you and I am sure you have been too……

I am simple going to write out the passage for you and then you to ask you to leave your comments. Do you relate to it? Does it resonate with you? Did it remind you of anything? Is there a situation in your life that you would do differently having read it?

“Everyone one of us has a soul within us that knows what it means to be a decent, loving, and noble human being. We all have a deep place inside of us that knows. When you do something wrong, you can try to fool yourself by rationalizing what you did at a conscious level. You can create a whole story about how the world is out of integrity and you’re the victim. You can build a case that the other person deserved what they did to you and you acted harshly to teach them a lesson. But it’s not your responsibility to serve as policeman of the universe. Your job is to show up as a leader within your own life by getting the lessons that this growth school is delivering to you, and by doing so, evolv into your authentic and best self” ~ Page 73, The Saint, The Surf & The CEO ~ Robin Sharma

Thank you Robin Sharma for delivering the gifts you have been given.

What do you think?

Does it resonate with you?

What did it make you think of?

Are you too shy to leave a comment?

Where do Parents Learn to Lead their Children?

I am writing this article from 35,000 feet, onboard Air Canada flight 933. I’m heading home after a very successful trip to Mexico. In the past 4 days, I have met with over 1000 Mexican Network Marketing Professionals. It was an incredible experience. I think that anyone who is serious about truly understanding the heart of Network Marketing needs to spend some time in Mexico learning from those people. While I was in Mexico, I recorded a 10 video training on how to build your own Network Marketing business. I am sure that ANYONE could follow these tips and create an organization. If you want to watch those lessons, you can find them at http://www.youtube.com/kendunnmlm or in the FREE training room at http://www.secretsofsimplicity.com.

I could tell you many things about what I experienced in Mexico over the past couple of days, but I have a much more serious issue on my mind as I sit here. Over the past 6 years I have dedicated my life to learning to become a better Leader. I have read hundreds of books, attended dozens of seminars, I have learn to lead from the masters of Leadership such as John C Maxwell, Keith Craft, Jim Rohn, Mahatma Gandi, Mother Teresa, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs and more. But I learned the most important Leadership in my life to date while in Mexico.

While at the Mexican Network Marketing Convention, I had the pleasure to hang out with 2 young Leaders from Monterrey, Juan & Mauricio Garza. I first met Juan & Mauricio in Dallas about 4 months ago and was instantly impressed by how mature they were, how refined in the ability to communicate. At the young age of 21 & 22, these men are fluent in English & Spanish. As well, the have a basic ability to communicate in German, Norwegian & 4 others languages.

Between Dallas and my time in Mexico city with them, I also had a chance to watch them interact with other people, sometimes people twice their age. I was amazed by the ability to interact with people, to communicate, to build relationships. These men, worked the room with the skill of a trained politician, while empowering people and touching the hearts of the folks they met, with the same karisma and humility that I would have imagined had I actually had a chance to meet my idols, Mahatma Gandi & Mother Teresa.

As I worked on my friendship with these chaps, I couldn’t help but wonder, Where they went to school?, who were there tutors?, they must have come from money to be that poised?, How could 2 men so young be so incredible?
After the convention, I was scheduled to travel to Monterrey, Mexico to do a meeting and a training with the Garzas. I have never been to Monterrey, so you can imagine my excitement. I love to travel and see new sights. But for the first time, I was not excited about seeing the city, I now had my police detectives hat on!!!!! I was going to conduct an investigation and find how they found leadership so early in their lives.

At home in Canada, I have been blessed with the most incredible family. My wife Julie is beautiful, humble, intelligent, caring, patient and passionate and my 2 children, Matthew & Laura are 2 of the most amazing young people I have ever met (yeah I’m biased). They are beautiful young leaders, who have a zest for exploration and love. (they get it all from Julie)

My desire to become a better leader over the past years has created a huge yearning to inside of me to make sure that my children recognize the leadership potential within them as early as possible. Lord knows, if I had have found the love for Leadership in my teenage years, I would be much further on today. Now don’t get me wrong, my kids have got it going on: they are both well on their way to second languages at their age, they are both excelling academically, they are both incredible athletes. I just had this incredible feeling that my trip there was going to reveal for me a secret to raising my own children.

Having spent 15 years in Investigative Policing, I have seen the best and worst of parenting. I have also realized that less then 1% of parents actually think about putting together a leadership plan for their children and far less than that actually do anything proactively to teach leadership to their kids. Parents who teach leadership to their children are failing in the roles are parents. Think about your own life for a second…..

Did you do anything in the young years of your children to teach them leaderdship? Or, like the way that I was raised, have you been just trying to get by, so confused and stressed out by life that you don’t even realize that you have a responsibility to do that?

Imagine how much better the world would be if all of us parents would start instilling good leadership teaching, pouring true leadership lessons into our children in the pre-teen years.. Wow!!!! Crime rates would be lower, poverty would be lower, the burden on our social assistance system would be lower, childhood pregnancies would be lower. It would truly “ heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me and the entire human race “.
Now I know that some of you are already crying as you read this, as I am, because you are realizing that you have not done enough for your children’s leadership development and it could be very dangerous. Let’s follow the end of this story, there is a great ending and an awesome plan that you can follow for the sake of your kids.

We had an amazing day together in Monterrey. We had over 100 people at our meeting and we did a great training. I was very humbled to learn that the Garza’s had invited me to stay in their home rather then the customary hotel rooms that I frequently visit.

Success Leaves Clues

After the meeting was over, we decided to sneek away for a private dinner with Dr & Mrs Garza, Juan and Mauricio. It was one of the best dinners that I have had in a long time. Dr Garza, Mrs Garza, Juan, Mauricio & I talked about Leadership for about 3 hours. We agreed that the world could only be made better if we all committed to becoming better leaders. Dr Garza & I realized a common love for reading Leadership books. We talked about many of our favorite books. Then the first discovery was made: Juan & Mauricio told me that they have been reading Leadership books since the young age of 15. They have read hundreds of titles by some of the worlds best leadership authors, like Og Mandino, John C Maxwell, Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy. Then the boys turned to me and told me that Dr Garza has been encouraging them to read leadership books for years and creating incentives in their lives for the successful completion of these books. I should have known…..

Next our conversation drifted into physical fitness. Dr Garza, in spite of his 36 years practicing in medicine, looked ½ his age. I asked what as the key to his youthful appearance and he said (discovery #2) everything in his life is in moderation and he takes daily exercise. Well you can already imagine the next part, Juan & Mauricio chimed in and said that they exercise everyday (Juan loves to jog up the side of mountains and Mauricio loves to weight train) and of course, they eat and live life in moderation.

You cant imagine how excited I am getting by this point, I am being given a road map for teaching children to be leaders!!!!!!!! Throughout the remainder of the nights, I found 2 more points that round out the secrets: Dr Garza insists on bringing his kids up in a faith based environment, explaining that people need as much help as they can get & Dr Garza, Juan & Mauricio have an incredible respect and appreciation for Mrs Garza. It is not just words: I saw it!

As I finished the night in the guest room of the family home, I meditated on the lessons that I had learned throughout the day. This experience showed me where I was doing the right things with my kids and where I needed to improve. I cried as I wrote notes on my experience at 2 am in a small bedroom in San Pedro Monterrey. I feel so confident now about my ability to create the right leadership environment for my children.

If you take a second to think about your own life and your children and search your heart with the following questions: have you truly created a real plan to help your children through their lives?, have you set the right example?, are you honoring your spouse and instilling that value in your kids? Are you taking daily exercise, let alone getting your kids to?, are you living a life of intentional moderation? If you like 99% of the population then the answer is no!!!! Its okay to cry, it cleans the heart!!!!

Thank you Dr & Mrs Garza, Juan & Mauricio for teaching me how to teach my children to discover the leaders within them.

Well, there’s the seatbelt sign. Great timing!!!!!

Key points to creating a leadership environment for your children.

1. Read leadership books yourself and create incentives for your children (John C Maxwell was paid allowance for reading books, look where that got him)
2. Take 20 minutes daily to get your heart pumping and get exercise. Get your kids on the same track.
3. Work on living a moderate life (less food, less excitement, less hype, less anger, less stress) and let your kids live that moderate life with you
4. Introduce faith (be it Christianity or otherwise) so that your kids can be around the right people and learn the right lessons; and
5. Cherish and honor your spouse and let your kids see that example.

About Ken Dunn

Ken began his professional career in investigative policing and developed a very dark and jaded personality through dealing with the world’s garbage. In his early 30’s, Ken turned his time to opening businesses, trying to create the financial freedom that had eluded him. Ken joined the Direct Selling Profession in November of 2003 and has traveled the world, teaching people the secrets to success in the Direct Selling Industry. Having had to confront his own leadership shortcomings in 2004, Ken dedicated his life to studying the Leadership Craft and considers himself a consummate student. In the past 8 years, Ken has shared the leadership stages with some of the worlds great Leadership Educators Such as Jim Rohn, John C Maxwell, Steven Scott, Phil Cooke & Keith Craft.
In Jan of 2010, Ken & his business partner founded a new movement in leadership education and direct sales called EvolvLife Productions, which provides the platform for leadership education for a team of direct sellers known as EvolvLife Team.

Ken’s core philosophy is that: Leadership is not taught, it is learn. The teachings are simply the stories and experiences of the world’s greatest leadership students. Leadership is the subject matter that you will never stop learning.

Leaders Live Every Day Like it is the LAST!

In Robin Sharma’s book, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, he speaks about it taking 21 days to make anything a habit. In John Maxwell’s books, he often talks about making things habits and how leaders always create habits that last. In Seth Godin’s book Outliers, Seth talk about the 10,000 hours rule (you need 10,000 hours at any craft to be an expert). I could go on for the next 2 hours just listing books that I have read that given merit to the idea that is contained in the title of this passage!

Robin reminded me of this 2 days ago that if we want to happiness in our lives then we should treat every day like it is the last day that we will live in this planet. Stop for a second and ask yourself, if this was your very last day on this planet, what would do you? Who would you talk to? Where would you go? Would you find time for your wife? Would you take a few more minutes for your kids? What would you do?

Okay, here is a point that we cannot refute. If we are going to excel in life and accomplish all of those things we wish to, if we are going to have a life of abundance, then we have to become leaders. WHY? We have to become Leaders because Leaders are the only people who accomplish those things. 99% of people on the planet are putting the cart before the horse right now. The masses think that if we get what we want then we can focus on being better. Those people just don’t get it. What I have learned studying Pastor Keith Craft’s words, John C Maxwell’s words, Seth Godin’s words, Robin Sharma’s words is that to get what we want, we have to become better first. I will save the becoming better stuff for another blog.

Lets talk for a couple of more minutes about living every day as if it is the last. First of all, if it was the last day and you knew about it ahead of time, you would get up early, you would take time for some exercise, you would pray (trust me if it was the last day, YOU WOULD PRAY (Wink)), you would take time to tell your spouse your love him/her, you would spent a few minutes with your kids and make sure they knew how much you cared, you run around all day sniffing flowers and enjoying the suns rays, you would not let any negativity steal even a second, you would get the things done that you had to do as you wouldn’t want to leave that hanging over someone else’s head and you would treat every person you came across with the utmost respect and love.

So, if you would do that on the last day and you are truly interested in living a better more successful life now, then live that way TODAY!

Here is what my day looks like every day:

6:00 am wake up (very weird, I used to set an alarm clock to do this but now it happens naturally)

6 am til 6:10 am reflect on how thankful I am of everything that I have and remind myself that today is last day

6:15 am til 7 am ride a recumbent bike in my office and read a great leadership book (I read 3-4 books a month)

7 am til 7:10 am reflect on the book I am reading and what I learned

7:10 – 7:30 am I read the bible and prepare for the day. (Body, Mind & Spirit prepared by 7:30 am)

7:30 am til 8 am breakfast, shower and hanging out with Kids

8 am – 8:30 am Hanging out with my best friend Julie

8:30 am and onwards taking on the day with a smile on my face and always remembering it is my last day.

In life’s crazy space, you can’t expect to get everything right everyday but you have to create habits.

At the end of the day, I finish my last call, clean up my last email, then I jump on that exercise bike again and read for another 30 minutes.

As my body cools down after the exercise, I think about how grateful I am for having another wonderful day.

You can do the same thing, maybe your time line is different, maybe you have to walk outside for 10 minutes instead of ride for 45. Maybe you have to get up earlier or go to bed earlier. It dosnt matter. Its just my example.

The bottom line is that leaders live every day Like it is the LAST! if you start by establishing some daily habits that are wrapped around body, mind and spirit and you treat every person every day like it is the last time you will ever see them, you will be amazed at the differences you will see in your life!

You Choose to Believe!!!!!

As I was sitting in Church today, I was overwhelmed with an idea that I could not break free from.  I have to apologies to Pastor Matt for slipping away from his message in my mind, as I am sure that he put a lot of time into it and it was a strong message, but I just could get this thought out of my mind.

Many of us out there are trying to Lead right now.  Many of us out there are trying to succeed in Business, in Life, in Our Family, in Our Community.   I have tens of thousands of friends right across the world that are all in the same place right now, trying to reach for a higher level of Life, to EvolvLife  (Wink!).   A lot of people are starting businesses from home these days to make extra money, but sadly, the vast majority of people that open home businesses come in ill prepared and equipped to succeed.

I have been privileged to travel around the world, sharing my experiences about building businesses at home.  I really love working with people and unscrambling the confusing world of starting a home business.

The first breakthrough that we have to get through with a new home business owner is that they have to start their businesses believing that they can be successful and that they will be…   The challenge is that they have never done it before and that the world around them has beaten them down so much that it is hard for them.

So how do teach someone to believe in something that they have never experienced, never touched, never felt, never owned?

I wanted to spend a couple of minutes and explain my thoughts on Belief and how to get there in any thing in your life.  In order for you to truly understand Belief and how to get it, you have to patiently read through this entire post.

So in church today, Pastor Matt used the word “believer” many times and actually said that “we realize that there are some people here today that do not believe yet and you are welcome”.   The word Believer is often used in Christianity to represents someone who Believes in Jesus, and on a larger scale, the Wholly Trinity ( the relationship between God the Father(1), God the Son(2)  and God the Wholly Spirit(3), hence the word “Trinity”).   DON’T WORRY THIS IS NOT A GOD PIECE, ITS JUST PART OF THE STORY.

Why do Believers Believe?

Ans:   because they choose to…….

About 1 month ago I was sitting in my living room on Saturday morning with my 6 year old Laura and 9 year on Matthew.  We were having God talk.  I had worked up to this particular day for a couple of weeks as today was the day that I was going to talk about the Wholly Trinity and help my young Leaders to understand the meaning.  As a leader, you need to accept that you are the leader of your children and, if you want them to develop into the best leaders they can be then you have to make a plan to do it.  As part of my plan, we spend time every second Saturday just talking about God.

So the Wholly Trinity is a bit of a complex situation but I thought that my young leaders were ready.  We started our talk with my question, “Tell me what you know about the Wholly Trinity?”

Matthew started right away by saying, “well God created everything, the people, the land, the way they think and ever the fact that we make mistakes:

then Laura chirped in and said “after he created everything, he got sad cause the people were making a lot of mistakes and doing some bad stuff so he wanted to come back to earth to teach but he couldn’t just come down from heaven because he wanted to have the people accept him in their own form.   So God came to earth as Jesus”.

Matthew chimed back in and said, “Jesus died for all of us and that’s why all of our sins are forgiven.  But remember dad, Jesus is really god on Earth”

Then the most profound words of the entire conversation came from my beautiful Daughter Laura, “Dad, when Grandpa died, you told us that he is always going to be here with us.  You told us that his spirit is hear with us right now.  (okay, this is when the tears started).  Well Dad, with God it’s the same way.   Jesus’ spirit is called the Wholly Spirit.   So really God, Jesus & the wholly Spirit are the same person.”

My Jaw dropped.  I was amazed how simple they made it all sound.

Then I asked one last question, “Do you believe that God is here with us right now?”

Matthew and Laura replied in unison, “Yes”

Believers are believers because they choose to believe.

What I realized today is that we get to decide if we believe.  Whatever you are trying to accomplish in your life, you will not succeed unless you believe.

If I look back into my own life 9 years ago, I was a broke Police Detective who had no direction or guidance in life.

when my son was born I realized that i needed to make change and I BELIEVED  that I could do it.  Before i had made a cent in Network Marketing, the Mortgage Industry, the Property Management Industry or the Importing Industry, I believed that I could do it.

What I realized this morning in Church and in my subsequent recollection of that ever important conversation with my kids is that you and I are all created the same way with a head, a heart, a mind, the ability to think, the ability to discern, the ability to decide and the ability to believe.

If you are going to be successful in Home Business or whatever you are pursuing success in you have to decide to believe that you will be successful before you even start.

So how does someone develop belief of their ability to succeed?

Ans:  you don’t have develop belief because you already have it.

listen, in order to succeed in anything you have to do IT!

To be successful in Network Marketing, you have to develop the right skills to do it.  In order to be a carpenter, you have to learn to cut wood, to be a mechanic you have to learn to fix cars, to be pilot you have to learn to fly a plane, to drive a boat you learn, to drive a car you learn, etc, etc.  Network Marketing is no different.

In order to succeed in Network Marketing you have to learn 2 skills:

1.   Leadership – how to lead yourself and other people.  You cannot make full time income in Network Marketing unless you become a better leader.   In our community, we have a strict and sharp focus on Leadership Education because each member of our community needs to develop leadership skills in order to lead.

2.  prospecting people – Mark Yarnell said, “the life blood of the business is the new blood”.   You have to sponsor people to make money.  You earn commissions when people join and buy products.

So here comes the paradigm shift………..

When you join all you have to believe to win is that you have the ability to learn 2 new skills.  You don’t have to believe that you can recruit people when you join only that you have the ability to learn.  When you join you don’t have to be a leader, only that you have the ability to learn leadership skills.

If you do not learn these 2 skills you will not succeed.

Its that simple.   You don’t to believe that you are a leader or a recruiter when you join, you just have to believe that you have the ability to learn.

Secondly, you have to believe that when you learn these 2 skills then you will be successful.   So, the secret to Network Marketing is learning those skills as fast as you can.  That is why I started studying Michael Clouse as soon as I joined.  I spent hours going through the materials that I bought at http://www.nexera.com.  That is why i have attended every MLM Mastermind event http://www.mastermindevent.com and learned from Art Jonak and Orjan Saele.  That is why I study leadership experts like Orrin Woodward, http://www.orrinwoodward.blodspot.com, Jordan Adler, Donna Johnson and many many others.

So right now think about this to become successful in network marketing all you have to have is a BELIEF that you can learn 2 simple skills.

If you can learn those 2 simple skills then you will win.  If you come to the 6th MLM Mastermind Event in Houston Texas from Oct 29-Nov 2 (http://www.mastermindevent.com), you will learn everything you need to know on these 2 skills.

Here’s the best part.  YOU GET TO CHOOSE TO BELIEVE….

This is a gift that you were given on the day you were born.

Think about Matthew & Laura, they learned about the Wholly Trinity and they choose to believe.   Before the believed in the Wholly Trinity, they believed they could learn.

One final thought, Once you choose to believe that you can learn to be a leader and learn to prospect new people, then the only thing sitting between you today and your success in home business, is action.

Start reading great leadership books, listening to great leadership tapes, start studying great recruiting materials.

Decide to believe you can learn and choose to believe you can be successful.

Once you Choose to believe then take action.

Once you take action then don’t stop.  Learning to lead and learning to prospect will take some people longer then others so don’t stop learning.  Don’t give up on your dreams.

Okay, here is the shameless plug.  To the right of this blog post, there is a link to a website where you can buy my book.  you will learn skills on leadership and prospecting in that book.  It is the cheapest place you can get it anywhere on the web.  Also, while you are there but the DVD called “How to Make Prospecting Second Nature” it is full of valuable information about prospecting.

All you have to do to Win is Choose to Believe…….

Independence Day Example of Massive Community Building

Happy Independence Day USA Leaders,

There are very few holidays in the world that carry the significance of July 4th.  Today America celebrates its 234th birthday.  There is a very clear parallel between the 234th birthday of America and building a community and creating culture.

The whole idea to community and culture is the “sum of the collective”.  The idea is that each member of a group will perform at a higher level if their sights are set on something much bigger then their own personal benefit.  Its called Legacy.  You see each of us wants to leave this earth knowing that we contributed to something bigger than we could have ever achieved on our own.

That is exactly what has happened in America.  This goal (legacy) is to leave this land better then when we arrived, to work all of our days to make this a better place for the next generation.  The only way that America could have lasted 234 years if if you Americans succeeded.

Now some of you will be saying to yourself, “how can you say it is better now with the Great Gulf Oilspill, the Katrina Devastation, the Economic recession, etc, etc, etc?”

That is a short sighted question.  Look what you incredible resilient Americans have already lasted through:  the 1st World War, the 2nd World War, racism, the Great Depression, Equal Rights, etc, etc, etc.

What dosn’t kill you makes you…………

Now stand up my friends.  Recognize that you are all part of the same community and you are indeed, building a huge culture.

Sometimes from the inside, it is hard to see, as a community, that you are winning the war, but I can tell you watching you from up here (Canada) you are champions!

You are setting a great example for the rest of the world to follow.

Enjoy your day!

Blessings,

Ken & Julie Dunn

Happy Father’s day – Thoughts on Leadership

Hello Leaders,

Julie & I just wanted to send out a sincere Happy Father’s Day to all of the men out there.

As a father, you have a serious responsibility to be the leader of your family.  In our community, we are all about instilling leadership values in the lives of our members in every way possible.

Fathers, use this day to make a new commitment that you are going to learn to be a better leader for your children.  As fathers, we must give our children a direction to follow.  Remember even if you children are 4 or 5 years old, you are leading them.

Children are very perceptive.  They see you even when you don’t think they are watching.

Make sure that you are setting the best example possible.  Take a minute to day to yourself, and make a list of how you want your children to be when they grow up.  Then compare that list to you and how you are living today.

If you want your children to possess certain skills or characteristics in their lives, they need to see those things in you, today!

If there are differences between the list of how your want your children to be in the future and how you are living right now, then those are the CHANGES THAT YOU NEED TO MAKE, ASAP!

The do as I say not as I do mentality does not work.  Think about this for a second.  Do you remember a quirky annoying habit that your dad had.  You use to always say that you would NEVER do that.  Then that perverbial day comes when you find yourself doing the same things.

We all have things in our characters that we need to work on.  Fathers of young children, you need to fix the flaws right now.  Your kids are watching you.  They will develop all of the traits that they see in you.  Ask any early childhood educator or therapist, they will tell you the same thing.

If you truly want to be a leader, it must start with leading your children.  Leading your children must start with leading yourself.

Use this father’s day to come to this realization, accept it and take your Leadership game to a higher level.  Your children, your family, your life depends on it.

Have a great day, enjoy time with family & reflect on your leadership of your family today.

In Leadership,

Ken & Julie Dunn

People will let you down – Stay true to your Mission!

Hi Leaders

People will let you down! Just get ready for it.

First of all, I wanted to take a second to say happy Memorial Day to all of my American friends.

I wanted to take some time to write you and give you some “10,000 hour” type thoughts on creating success in MLM.  If you havn’t read Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers, then read it right away.  In the book Mr Gladwell studies the elite of the world.  The elite level performers, in sport, in business, in faith and in life.  Mr Gladwell spends a copious amount of time determining what are the true secrets to success in life.  After all his research, the biggest thing that he found that all elite level performers had in common was 10,000 hours worth of experience in their chosen area.  So if we apply this idea to network marketing, then the message is: put your time in, learn as you go, and you will eventually achieve the success you are looking for.  You CANNOT cheat success.  You have to put the 10,000 hours in.  If you want to get more success faster, then the only way to expedite your success is to put more hours in a day.
Yes, I realize that some will say that i cant do it, with the commitments of life, family, job, etc, etc, etc.  I get that.  Just don’t be so hard on yourself if you don’t make a million dollars in your first year in the profession.

I don’t know if i have a full 10,000 hours yet, but if you ask anyone who knows me, they will tell you I have probably exceeded it.  “one of the hardest workers in the entire industry”, Art Jonak calls me.  I work 12-18 hours a day on this profession and on myself.  I love it.  I am infatuated with the art of Leadership Development.

Anyway, I dont want to drift any further away from my point.  Here is the 10,000 hour MLM Millionaire business building secret that you’ve been waiting for.  People will constantly let you down.  Get use to it.

In our Profession, it is extremely important that you develop huge strong goals and “why”.  Developing huge goals and whys, will protect you when people let you down.  A good friend and developing mentor, Orrin Woodward (www.the-team.biz) says that you gotta be hungry to be successful in mlm.  It is so true.  you have to be hungry to accomplish your goals.

In the last 7 years that I have been in MLM, I have been lied to, lied about, cheated, swindled out of money, promised the world, etc, etc, etc.  I even have had rumors spread by company’s in order to protect wrongful and hurtful actions.  The bottom line is I  Don’t hold any ill will against any of them and I would suggest that you don’t either.

I was sitting with my wife and best friend Julie tonight when she asked me, “how can you stay so calm about this stuff all the time?”  I said there were a couple of reason.  1.  i am an extremely faith based person.  I know that if Jesus can be betrayed by his own disciples then anything i’m having done to me is not that bad & 2.  I realize that most people are acting out of desperation and they don’t realize what they are doing.  If i get angry or spiteful or vengeful towards another person then i am loosing the chance to help that person to grow.  This is the true art of being a leader.

Leaders must be the example to even those that attack them. If you truly understand the real purpose of our Profession then you realize the importance of being a leader.  Our country is in a very sad state right now because there are not enough people focusing on being better leaders.  Network  Marketing is the last bastien for hope in leadership education.

Leaders must stay true to their mission.  My mission is to help to form an entire new platform for leadership education in the world.  In the past 14 weeks, I have had 1600 men & women from Canada, USA, Mexico, Columbia, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia & Malaysia join me in my goal to create this new level of leadership education.   If your mission and resolve to accomplish it are strong enough, then others will join you in accomplishing it, as long as it is just, righteous & aligned with what is right. Leaders must be strong, forgiving, humble, loving and accepting.

The next time that someone lets you down, then step up and use this as a chance to set the right example.  YOU ARE A LEADER afterall.

I have learned on many occasions that people will let you down.  Expect it, accept it, love the people the most that let you down, accept your leadership role and stand up!
Cheers,
Ken Dunn

No One Said Being a Leader is Easy!

Hi Leaders,

Well here I find myself in front of my LapTop on Easter weekend.  I just finished a three way call with an incredible leader that just joined our team.  At 9 am this morning (saturday(easter saturday)), I was in our recording studio putting together 2 videos for our team, then i wisked off to an in-home team training, then to my son’s hockey game, now on the phone building.  I am sure you get the point I am trying to make.  ”The Speed of the Team will only ever be 1/2 of the Speed of the Leader”.  John Martin once introduced me to a crowd of people by saying, “Ken leads the pack because he is willing to go to bed 1 hour later and get up 1 hour earlier than anyone else”.  That statement has really stuck with me.  I have been on an incredible journey over the past 7 years.  I have incredibles highs and incredible lows.  To all of the experiences, i have one word “AMAZING”.

I wanted to spend a couple of minutes and talk about Leadership.  I am fascinated by this topic.  Our team is building a complete culture around leadership development.  We truly believe Leadership Education in North America (the world for that matter) is falling apart.  If someone were to ask you, “would you like to be a better leader?” you would likely glass over and not know how to answer it.  But if instead they asked you “would you like to be a better parent?, would you like to be a better spouse?, would you like to be a better employee?, would you like to be a better employer? or a better member of the community that you live in?”  To those question you would AUTOMATICALLY answer yes.  Well each of those things are just different forms of leadership.

the best thing we could all do in our lives today would be just to decide to spend the rest of our lives in study of becoming the best leader we can be.

Now as you are deciding to become a better leader, let me be the first to tell you:  It’s not going to be easy, but it is going to be amazing.

Recently I was given Kevin Hall’s new book Aspire as a gift by Chris & Josephine Gross from Networking Times.  I ate the book up in just 6 days.  One of the first things i picked up in the book is the meaning of the word Leader.  It comes from the root Lea (PATH) der (FINDER).  To be a leader is to be a pathfinder.  This was a great breakthrough for me.  over the past couple of years I have struggled a bit because I would always be looking for those people that wanted to run as fast as me.  Maybe you have been through a similar search.  I was releaved to have this understanding of leadership as it has helped me to realize that the leader is the pathfinder.  As a leader it is sometimes going to feel lonely but take solice in the fact that you are out in front paving the way!

Another breakthrough that I have had about 2 years ago is that it is extremely important for every leader to be a follower.  There in no one on this planet that is perfect, that has all of the answers, that know all, that sees all.  If you want to be a great leader to your team, then you also have to be a great follower to others.  I have chosen my mentors and the people that I choose to follow very well.  I can honestly say that I follow God First but also, i have incredible mentors and advisors that i follow also like: Trey White, Art Jonak, Orjan Saele, Brent Hicks, Orrin Woodward, Donna Johnson, Dan Kinnison, and others.  Each of them I take advice from/follow for different reasons, but I would not be where I am today without them.  I openly show the people that I lead the loyalty that I have to the aforementioned.  I have even had some of them speak to my partners.  Why would I do that?  you may be thinking?  Wouldn’t that just cause confusion?  The answer is simple.  How can i ask anyone to follow me if I myself am not willing to be a follower.   I want my group to see who I follow and why I follow them.  I would give the same advice to you.  You see, you should choose your mentors and advisors wisely.  It likely was Solomon that first gave that advice.  When the people that follow you know who your mentors are, have relationships with your mentors and like your mentors, then they will feel even more confident in the advice that you are giving them.

Often as leaders, we are going to be asking those that follow us to do things that they may be uncomfortable with.  After all life is about acting outside of your comfort zone.  If you do not open your community up to let them know and meet and experience the people that advise you then how can they ever be 100% confident with the direction you are leading them in.  On the other hand if you allow your community to know your mentors then it adds an addition degree of safety and security to the minds of each member of the community.

Think about it this way.  If you are building a community of leaders that will teach life and leadership lessons to the community members, then who is teaching them?

Finally, if you are trying to be a leader and you are not a follower then STOP RIGHT NOW! and find someone to follow.

I hope these thoughts help you in your own Leadership Journey.

Don’t Forget to build your local market

Hi Leaders

Well first and foremost congratulations on an incredible first 5 weeks with EvolvHealth.  The EvolvLife Team has grown to over 450 Members in Canada, USA, PR & Mexico in the first 5 weeks.  That is incredible.  To put that achievement into perspective, it is as fast as my last business grew in the first 4 weeks.  My last business grew to over 100,000 distributors and 80 customers in the first 3 years.  That is amazing.

I wanted to remind everyone to make sure that you spend some time building in your local market.  It is the backbone of your business.  I think the name home based business is the wrong name for what we do, because if you are going to make money in this business, you have to get out of the home.  If you look back to your best experiences in the network marketing industry, it came from a combination of working the internet/phones and getting out and building local leadership.

There is nothing that replaces getting out the belly to belly and getting to know people.  When you build locally, it gives you a chance to really quickly build trust and confidence.  When you start driving around with your new leader and he/she gets to see you in action, it is only then that they will take action themselves.  So many people that have  ”been around the block”, “got the t-shirt”, “been burned out by a company” try to do it just one the phone.  It dosn’t work the same.  You have to do both.

I have been home from convention for 2 days, tomorrow i am heading up to Stouville, about 40 minutes from my house.  I am going to be enrolling 4 new leaders into the business and helping them to put their list together.  We are going to be booking our Private Evolv Reception (PER) and getting to work.  You have to do this.  Everyone thinks that they can work it faster by sitting on the phone and calling networkers.  That is crazy.  It dosnt work that way.

Think about when you first joined the Profession, how excited you were.  Your first experiences were when your sponsor or upline went to work with you.  You drove around together, you met for coffee, you had fun, you did one on ones together.  Ahhhhh, the old flip chart.   Don’t deprive your new leader of that chance to start right!

Imagine if every leader in ELT actively worked their local market at the same time as they work the phone.  Wow!  We would already have meetings going on in 20 cities.  ”You have to get out their and show the plan” as they say in the big “A”.

Take control of your business and your local market.

In Leadership,

Ken
